What Is a Put Option Screener?

A put option screener scans the market for the best stocks to sell put options on. Instead of opening 50 different option chains by hand, the screener filters by the things that actually matter for put sellers: implied volatility relative to history, IV vs. realized volatility, how far the stock has pulled back, trend, and option liquidity. The output is a ranked list of setups where the premium is rich relative to the risk you take.

Most put screeners on the market are either expensive (Barchart Premier at $30/month, OptionStrat at $39/month) or buried inside a broker platform that requires a signup, a deposit, and a learning curve before you see a single trade idea. Flow Proof is a free put option screener with no paywall and no signup required to browse the results.

How Flow Proof Scores Puts

1. IV Rank (0-100)
How rich is current implied volatility versus the last year of the same stock? IV Rank above 50 means option premiums are elevated. Above 70 means they're expensive — that's the sweet spot for selling puts.
2. IV/HV Ratio
Implied volatility divided by realized (historical) volatility. Above 1.0 means the market is pricing in more movement than the stock has actually been delivering. That's the volatility risk premium and it's the structural edge for put sellers.
3. Drawdown from 52-Week High
Selling puts on a stock at all-time highs is more dangerous than selling on the same stock 15-25% off its highs. The screener rewards modest pullbacks (better entry) and penalizes stocks in freefall (assignment risk).
4. Trend & Entry Timing
A 50-day moving average filter and short-term momentum check. Stocks crashing through support get downgraded. Stocks consolidating after a pullback get a boost.
5. Liquidity Check
Bid-ask spreads, open interest, and volume. If you can't get filled near the mid, the screener doesn't surface it.
All five factors combine into a single setup score and a letter grade from A to F. A and B grades are the only ones worth a closer look.

What Makes the Best Put Option Screener

A good put option screener does three things. It surfaces the best put-selling candidates without you having to filter manually. It gives you enough context to know why a setup is good (or bad). And it produces a specific, tradeable recommendation, not a wall of raw data.

Most free screeners stop at step one. They give you a sortable table and walk away. Paid screeners like Barchart give you more filters but still leave you to do the analysis. Flow Proof goes further: every stock has a one-click AI Analyze button that pulls the live option chain, picks a strike at your target delta, calculates premium, breakeven, max risk, and annualized return, and writes a 2-3 sentence rationale on whether the trade makes sense right now given the market regime.

How to Use the Screener (Step by Step)

  1. Open the scanner. Sort by Score (highest first). Look at the top 3-5 setups.
  2. Check IV Rank. Anything below 30 means premium is cheap and not worth selling. Above 50 is interesting. Above 70 is the green zone.
  3. Verify the grade and trend. A or B grade with a positive or neutral trend. Skip C, D, F unless you have a specific thesis.
  4. Click AI Analyze. The AI returns a target strike (typically 20-25 delta), expiration (30-45 DTE), credit, breakeven, and annualized return.
  5. Size the trade. Cash-secured puts require buying power equal to strike × 100. Make sure you can afford assignment on every contract you sell.
  6. Log it. Drop the trade in the Trade Blotter to track P&L. If you get assigned, the wheel tracker continues automatically with a covered call recommendation.

Who This Screener Is Built For

Income-focused options sellers. Cash-secured puts, short puts in margin accounts, the wheel strategy. If you're trying to generate consistent monthly income from option premium and you want a screener that actually understands volatility risk premium, this is built for you.

It's not built for directional traders buying puts as a bearish bet, and it's not built for high-frequency 0DTE traders. The 30-45 DTE window where theta decay is most efficient is the focus.

What the Screener Won't Do

It won't scan all 5,000 optionable stocks. The watchlist is 25 high-volatility tickers popular with put sellers (SOFI, CHWY, AFRM, TSLA, GME, DASH, UPST, ROKU, and similar). The reason is focus — sellers don't need a haystack, they need a curated list of names where premiums are consistently rich. If you want a specific ticker that isn't covered, the AI Analyze tool works on any symbol with a liquid option chain.

It also won't tell you what the market is going to do tomorrow. No screener can. What it can do is rank setups by quality so the trades you make are statistically tilted in your favor.

FAQ

Is the put screener really free?
Yes. No signup required to browse results. Creating a free account adds the trade blotter, wheel tracker, and AI analysis. There's no paywall, no trial that expires. Optional support via buy-me-a-coffee on the pricing page.
What data does the screener use?
Live option chains and Greeks from Tradier. Historical prices from Yahoo Finance for HV calculation. VIX and yield curve from FRED. CNN Fear & Greed scraped from cnn.io. The AI runs on GPT-4o-mini.
How is this different from a cash-secured put screener?
The same engine drives both views. The cash-secured put screener filters specifically for buy-the-stock-if-assigned setups (defined risk). The general put option screener includes the same setups plus naked-put and credit-spread candidates.
What delta should I sell?
Default is 20-25 delta in normal VIX regimes. The screener adjusts: in low VIX environments it suggests 30-35 delta to compensate for thinner premium; in high VIX it pulls back to 15-20 delta to reduce assignment risk while still collecting meaningful credit.
What if I get assigned?
You buy 100 shares at the strike, minus the premium you collected. The trade blotter detects assignment automatically and switches to wheel-tracker mode. The AI then recommends a covered call to sell against the new share position.
